Da Lat

De Lat was one of our favorite places. We visited a couple of waterfalls but I put my favorite one here. I was happy to be able to climb into King Kong’s hands. I think a lot of visitors were too short to do it. One lady did show up with a blonde curly wig to pose, it was very funny. We had to strategically take photos with the waterfall since people stood all over the rocks and I did not want to climb them. Luckily, there was a truck to pick up visitors and carry us swiftly up the hill.

Lastly, we visited ‘The Crazy House’ which I believe was made by Dang Viet Nga, who is the daughter of Vietnam's former general secretary Truong Chinh. She still lives in the crazy house today. The house was more like a crazy labyrinth, like walking through a painting or sculpture. The winding stairs were intimidating but I wanted to see as much as I could. There are even cute sitting spots like within a giant peach or the stump of a tree.

We finished our evening at the night market, which was really intense. We tried a savory Roti, it’s not the same as the Caribbean ones that I a used to but it was delicious.

Nha Trang

From Nha Trang, we took a boat to Monkey Island! it was a day filled with taking photos of monkeys and resting on the beach. There were a lot of monkeys and they were all very comfortable around humans. One even chased me to touch my pants :P i think they looked confusing because they are very oversized and flowy.

During our visit, a young girl waved at me to grab my attention. She posed and wanted me to take a photo of her. We became facebook friends, so that I could send her the photo. We ended up meeting her in the morning for breakfast, it was amazing. Funny enough, it was quite easy to carry a conversation with each-other thanks to google translate. Her name is Tiên. She is a student in Nha Trang, who dream of going to Hanoi to study medecine. She was a sweetheart to us and I feel lucky to have met her.

Quy Nhon

Guy Nhon was Jehan’s birthday Air Bnb. We found a cute little apartment, in a tall tower that had a view of the city and the sea. It was nice to have a kitchen to cook breakfast for ourselves. This stay was filled with rest, a beach day, and good food! We found a cool bar called ‘John and Paul inn’. The wall was covered in posters from classic rock artists and a few more current ones. The band was so talented, they sang in both English and Vietnamese. Lastly, we had a lovely sushi birthday dinner meal.

Day trip to Da Nang

While in Hoi An, we went to Da Nang to go to the Sun World Amusement park. It was a very overcast, cloudy day and there was lots of people. It wasn’t the kind of amusement park you would have imagined. There were 1 or 2 mountain side roller coasters, a game area with a play ground for kids and a few 3D/4D experiences. The park was divided in two and you had to take a sky gondola to reach both parks. For some reason, my body decided to have a slight fear of heights (which i’m normally not afraid of). The first park was mainly a large garden, a small maze, and a hidden cliffside temple with a Buddha :)

The second park, felt like Hogwarts but if it were set in France? The castle on the hill looked very mysterious covered by mist. The rest of the park was trying to emulate Paris, with a cathedral, gargoyles and all. Jehan had mixed feeling about the amusement park but I had a pretty goof time!

Hoi An

Hoi An was one of my favorites, this is where we spent Lunar New Year!

We stayed in a nice Air Bnb hotel, with a view of the lake. The streets were full of people, full of celebration, hustle, and bustle. We walked through a very busy street market, and tried some street food :) I love their fried crepes. We spent Tet at the night market, it was loud, bright, and colorful. The boats on the river had lit up lanterns. Candlelight lanterns floated on the river, I lit one for my family <3

We also spent time at a custom tailor shop called Bebe, They were fantastic. In the end, I got 2 linen jumpsuits, and 1 pair of linen pants with a loose button-up. Jehan got a 3 piece suit and a shirt :) he looked very handsome. Luckily, I was able to keep a jumpsuit and pants. We sent the rest home to Jehan’s family for us to bring back at the end of the trip.

Hue

We had one night in Hue and we went to the Imperial Citadel. At first glance, the main building looked like it was under construction. But with further exploring, there was a lot to see. My favorite part was the theater, it made me think of my Nana. The theater is still functioning, and people can go see an Opera in this historic theater. It was a quiet place to walk around, there weren’t too many people since its the dry season. But many people were having their portraits taken in traditional clothing for tet. At the end of the day, we had a Korean BBQ. It was interesting and my first time having it on a coal fire:)

Phong Nha

This was a rest day for me:P as usual my body needed it. But Jehan went to the cave!

He went looking for the Phong Nha Cave but instead went to Paradise Cave. I will definitely missed out but my love took me with him through face time hehe. In a way, I saw them too<3. Here are the photos he took:

Cua Lo / Story time

To be honest Cua Lo was not the best for us. It was a one-night stop and the weather was horrible. Normally, it seems to be a lovely beach town. But with the rainy/cold-ish weather, we had been experiencing on and off from the north + a cheap hotel that sadly had no hot water (solar-powered heating with no sun = cold shower). Cua Lo wasn’t the best memory.

My love did go out and get us a bunch of snacks, which saved us. Ordering takeout was not working, so dinner was chips and Choco Bun things (which basically are better Joe Louis).

I will use this moment to tell a side story:

From Cua Lo to Phong Nha it rained some more. It was pouring and we wanted to stop for a break to eat. We were looking around for a restaurant “With good chairs’’ is usually the protocol. Good chairs meaning that I am able to comfortably sit on them. Vietnam is full of restos with little plastic chairs to sit on. Which my ass will either break or I will have a hard time squatting down and/or getting up.

Anyways we thought we saw a sign and a large group of people. We pulled into the driveway.

We make hand gestures and ask if we can eat there. And a man says ‘you want to eat with us?’ and we answer yes. They say ok, and within 5 seconds a large metal table is brought out with tall, sturdy plastic chairs. They say ‘ you can eat with us’, as a group of people started to sit with us.

I forgot to add that the man had approached us asking what languages we spoke, he spoke Spanish and Jehan gestured saying that I did too. So we are soaking wet, freezing cold and my spanish brain turns on.

The man asked if we ate Vietnamese food and if we knew how to use chopsticks. I said yes to both as he explained the different portions of food, it was a glorious hot pot.

He noticed me shaking with my chopsticks from the cold and said ‘are you sure you know how to use them?’ and I explained myself. In the end, he told us to go ahead and eat with our hands. There were veggies, eggs, a sort of beef, chicken, and sticky rice cake.

The men were very chummy with Jehan, offering him ‘Vietnamese wine’ which is very strong and reminds me of moonshine.

The men drank and got a little flirty with me, they wanted me to stay and Jehan to leave haha. They were very inquisitive about why we were not married. I was proposed marriage from one of the men and he did not understand that I love Jehan. It was very funny.

Long story short, the cherry to this story is I asked a young man who spoke English ‘out of curiosity and to confirm, is this a restaurant of a family gathering.’ He confirmed our suspicion, it was in fact a Tet (New Year’s) gathering that his family had organized. I apologized and was both embarrassed/delighted. They did not accept any money for the food. We are now in many of their family photos. Everyone wanted to shake our hands and exchange kind words.

This is only one of a few side stories so far but it was a kindness we really needed. Vietnamese people are the most generous and friendly people I’ve met overall.

p.s a grandma kept smacking my ass on the way to the bathroom as if there was something on it. And then proceeded to grab the ass of another lady with a smaller bum. As if to rub some of mine off onto here. It was very funny.

Tam Coc

We started the day with Jehan being brave and doing a solo hike to the White Dragon. It sat at the top of a large mountain. The hike was full of narrow and crumbling steps.

You know me, I avoided it :) but, luckily there was a lovely sort of botanical garden with trees, ponds, sculptures and a large rice field to explore.

Next, we did a little boat tour. Which turned out to be a VIP boat tour. (This is one of the only perks of traveling as a plus size person). It was Jehan and I + the lady who rowed the boat. She was very funny.

The experience was a little uncomfortable, because the people who rowed the boats seemed to find my size funny. Getting in or out of the boat, we would hear little chuckles. But our lady was very kind and always made sure to hold the boat tightly against the stairs with Jehan, in order for me to get on and off safely. Once Jehan and I were settled onto the boat, she would jokingly say ‘Bye bye’ and wave to us while our boat started to float away slightly, she would jump on.

She must have been the strongest little old lady that we had ever met, to be able to row us around for 3 hours. But we did our best to help with the extra paddles provided.

We went through several caves of difference lengths. She navigated the boat like a pro. We visited a few temples, seeing many offerings. We enjoyed the peaceful paths down the river and the surrounding nature. We even saw the mountain where they filmed ‘King Kong’, it was smaller than I expected.

All in all, we had a very productive day.

Ha long

Ha Long Bay was one of my favourite stops so far. We took a day cruise on the bay. I had a little bit of beach time while Jehan did a hike to the top of Ti Tóp mountain. We then got into a boat that went through a small cave passage way to put us in the centre of mountains. The last activity was another hike with a cave visit, Jehan enjoyed it while I stayed on the boat :P My knees were not up for doing the stairs.

Hanoi

We arrived in Hanoi and immediately I needed sleep. Our flight was full of cute little kids/babies and I did not sleep. We woke up and had our first Pho for breakfast. It fed our souls. Hot, with fresh noodles and meat. I had a pineapple juice on the side and Jehan had a coconut.

We were Hanoi for 2 days, 3 nights. It is the busiest and loudest city i’ve ever visited. It was a little harsh on the senses. there are no rules on the road, and to cross the street you must do it slowly. Always be aware of your surroundings because there will be cars and scooters everywhere. We visited temples, the Hanoi opera house (from the outside) which was inspired by Palais Garnier in Paris, the Saint Joseph of Hanoi cathedral, Ho Chi Mins museum and where his body is kept.

We also visited the famous train street and had dinner as it passed by the narrow path.

Layover in Istanbul

We arrived in Istanbul feeling wrecked and tired. We were able to rent a car in order to drive to our room in town. In the morning we had the best breakfast. Consisting of cheese, bread, bagels, homemade jam, and a version of shakshuka.

The vibe of the city is very mixed. Hectic, busy, and loud. We were walking through very touristy areas so people were either very pushy or kind, there was not really a lot of in-between.

We were not able to visit the blue mosque but we did visit the Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazar. I was able to find a gorgeous scarf to cover my hair. The inside was truly a site to see. They make you take off your shoes before entering, which felt like a very grounding aspect of the visit.

I do want to say they have the best tea! I finally got to try some real Turkish Delight which was delicious :) Also the city is covered in cats, I was so ready to find Sam a Turkish sibling.

P.s Turkey airlines is very good! Best airplane food I’ve had so far and the seats actually had a bit more space for once.

Day in Paris

We were gifted a lovely day in Paris by Jehan’s family, fully planned out. This did included Palace of Versailles the following day.

The day started with a sweet all you can eat brunch!

Then we got a private tour of the city in a tiny classic french car. The guide was so sweet, it was like having our own personal history channel.

Lastly, we ended the day with a boat tour of the city. It was too cold to sit on the top deck of the boat, so we stayed inside. Also got some nice photos on the way:)

Versaille

Versaille was beautiful…but I wish it were only Jehan and me there.

I was tired and sore from our adventures at Disney. The day was grey and windy. If I remember correctly I think that I’d chosen to wear a dress (bad idea). Versaille stood golden in all of its glory.

My favorite part was not the hall of mirrors but the long corridor of paintings and busts. Maybe because the freedom and space to move around made things less claustrophobic.

Might visit again in the spring, in order to take the time to see the garden. My body was limping by the end of the day and was not up for the challenge.

Luckily Jehan’s friends Helen and Adrien took us in for our Paris adventures. They were a godsend and I got to meet little Victor.

New Years Eve and Day at Disney Paris!

Time to catch up :) A lot has been going on, the next few posts will be backtracking our outings.

Day 1:

My love treated me to two days at Disney Paris, as a birthday/Christmas present. His family also came with us! They rented an Air BnB near Disney. We were so spoiled.

We got special tickets that allowed us to have access to both Disney parks from 5:30 pm to 2 am. We did the New Year countdown near the castle. It was very crowded but magical.

My favorite ride was probably the Buzz Lightyear ride, I kicked ass. I think I hit some of the really hard targets and got around 75 000 points, which made me fall under the second-highest rank in the game hehe.

I also wanted to mention that I was very brave and went on ‘ Le train de la mine’ which was terrifying. I screamed like the 6 year old little girl I am haha. I have a photo to prove it, which I might add later. We also went on the Pinocchio and Ratatouille ride.

Day 2:

We went to Disney studios, and I got to meet some cool characters.

I wanted to meet Black Panther or Spider-Man but instead we met this guy:P He sounded like Elvis..I think he was doing his best American accent.

It rained a lot that day but we did get to see Black Panther, Black Widow and the Wakandan warrior from platforms. Thor and Loki also did a little skit in the square. Overall we had a fun time on this rainy day. My feet were wrecked.

Juno and Omaha Beach

Today we paid our respect to Juno and Omaha Beach. During WWII on D-Day, brave Canadian troops landed on the shore of Juno Beach, and the American troops landed on Omaha Beach.

I felt very privileged, calm, and blessed to be walking along these shores. Juno Beach was covered in beautiful rocks and large seashells. The tide was foamy and cold, but it wrapped my feet with such an invitingly soft tide.

Juno Beach 12/29/2022

After strolling on the sand, we walked back to the Juno Beach Center. We were able to visit a type of bunker that was right outside. I feel like it’s very important to ‘touch parts of history’ whenever possible. Entering the narrow stairs of the bunker, and needing to scoot back down the stairs on my bum was humbling.

Being able to look through the opening of the dugout, like many men must have done was special to me. Touching the stone walls and thanking those who fought for the world we know.

The exhibit was larger than expected. Full of documentary videos, photos, and personal items. The interactive games made for kids were quite fun and educational. Even for a 29-year old hehe. The Juno Beach center is a must if you are in the area. At this time the Omaha Beach Center was closed.

Unfortunately, by the time we had finished with the Juno Beach exhibition, the sun was starting to set. But we knew it was important to visit Omaha Beach, even in the dark. The projected light onto the sculpture helped guide the way. The art piece represented freedom and the strength of those who fought. Again, we followed the tide for me to wet my hands. The tide was going out. There were no stones or shells, and the sand was very flat. By the time we walked back to the sidewalk, the tide seemed to be rushing in.

It was a very meaningful day, and we must always remember.

Visiting Rouen, France

December 27th 2022

We visited the town of Rouen, and were fortunate enough for it to be a mild and sunny day! For some reason, the light felt like golden hour for most of the day which was truly special.

We visited Notre Dame de Rouen which was jaw-dropping. The details of the statues on the outside of the cathedral were intimidating. Visitation was surprisingly free. The cathedral was cold, you could see your breath in streams of light. It was under construction but still a magical beast. I found the statues of Joan of Arc and Saint Joseph, then lit a candle for my family.

I had my first french kebab sandwich, which was amazing! I’ve never eaten a sandwich so slowly and with such savoring bites in my life.

We passed ‘Le Gros Horloge’ which was beautiful, finding a stone carving underneath it. We made our way to The Joan of Arc Church where I believe stands where she was burned at the stake. Fun fact: Joan of Arc was later made a saint…which feels oddly strange since she is very celebrated in the town where she was murdered.

The day finished with hot chocolate, shopping, and seeing friends.

It was a good start to getting to my journey in France.
